One of the nation’s top linebackers is off the board, again. Wyomissing, PA (Wyomissing Area) outside linebacker Alex Anzalone committed to play for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Anzalone chose the Irish over the Florida Gators and the Penn State Nittany Lions. Originally committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes, his decision is expected to be final this time around.
Since decommitting from Ohio State, Florida has been right in the thick of the hunt for Anzalone. He visited Gainesville several times and frequently mentioned the Gators among his leaders. At one point, he mentioned Florida and Notre Dame were the two at the top of his list, but many thought the orange and blue held the advantage. On Sunday, Anzalone made it clear that it was the Irish at the top alone.
The Gators still have some work to do to complete the 2013 recruiting class, but not many spots to fill. Anzalone was a desired addition, but with four linebackers already committed (along with two others and several that could play the buck position in the 2012 class) it wasn’t necessarily a priority. Florida moves on from Anzalone looking to fill their remaining needs.
