Baseball Recap: Florida 8 – Georgia Southern 2; Brian Johnson Leads Gators To Win

Designated hitter Brian Johnson powered the No. 1/5 Florida Gators to a victory on Tuesday night. The reigning SEC Player of the Week drove in five runs to lead the Gators to an 8-2 win over the Georgia Southern Eagles.

Johnson matched a career high with the five RBI and may have just put himself in a position to contend for back-to-back SEC honors. He went 2-for-5 on the night while hitting his seventh double and fifth homerun. Catcher Mike Zunino went 2-for-3 and scored two runs. The Gators other six runs were scored by six different players.

On the mound, starting pitcher Greg Larson only got through three innings, but it was enough to get the win to improve his record to 4-0 on the season. The Gators closed out the game using five different relief pitchers over the final six innings.

Florida improves to 29-8 with the victory and now has two days off before the weekend series against Georgia.

The Preview

Coming off of a 3-1 week, the Gators need a 4-0 one. This week sets up perfectly with opponents from the state of Georgia coming south to face Florida at home. The Gators will look to sweep the week and come away with four convincing victories as they push themselves further out of their recent slump. Four wins will go a long way this time of year to help Florida gain momentum heading into the tournament part of the season.

The game will mark a milestone of sorts for senior pitcher Greg Larson. Larson will be making only his second start of the season, but his 105th appearance in a Gators uniform. That will move him into third on Florida’s all-time list.

Gators No. 5 In Baseball America Top 25; Florida Rises 2 Spots

Fresh off of a 3-1 week with a win over the nation’s No. 1 team, the Florida Gators rejoined the top five of the Baseball America Top 25. Up two spots from No. 7, the Gators come in at No. 5 this week.

Florida is joined in the top five by instate rival Florida State (who the Gators swept this season), future conference rival Texas A&M, and current SEC members Kentucky and LSU. The future is very bright for the state of Florida and the Southeastern Conference. South Carolina, Arkansas and Ole Miss are also in the top 25.

The Gators face one of the SEC teams not ranked this week – Georgia – in a three-game weekend series starting Friday in Gainesville. First up is a Tuesday meeting with Georgia Southern.
